Industrial Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Freitag, 16. November 2018, 11:00-12:30
KIT, Campus Nord
Institut für Automation und Angewandte Informatik IAI,
Geb. 449, Hörsaal 140

Minsky articulated the promise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to be “making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men.” As a consequence AI-enabled automation not only is capable of solving repetitive tasks following explicit instructions. Breakthroughs in deep learning have given impressive examples. For example, Image recognition has surpassed human standards. Another example are generative adversarial networks capable of transferring art styles between images.

Important prerequisites for the successful application of artificial intelligence is data availability and computation power. These prerequisites are given for an increasing number of digital applications. Reason is the increased digitization of industrial applications which is supported by initiatives like Industry 4.0 or the Industrial Internet Consortium.

The talk gives an introduction to artificial intelligence in the context of industrial applications. The basic requirements for AI applications are discussed. Specific focus is given to data requirements and how data requirements influence AI application. In this context deep learning and probabilistic programming are considered. Specific focus will be given to industrial plants and how AI applications have the potential to allow for efficient, safe and resource optimized production.

The talk provides many examples of suitable AI applications in the industrial domains. Beyond this, current limitations of AI applications and the effect of wrong technological conceptions are discussed as well.
