The goal of the work is to develop methods, programs, and devices for modeling, simulation and analysis of energy networks mainly focusing on electricity networks.

Network Modeling: Electrical transmission and distribution networks are modelled as a basis for all further work (Simulation, Analysis). In this regard, models of island and industrial networks (e.g. KIT-CN), regional distribution networks (Karlsruhe city network, Essen, Baden-Württemberg), as well as regional transmission networks (interconnected network of Germany, Europe) are developed.

In order to model the generators, the BNA power plant list and the EEG-plant register (with approximately 1.56 million single units), among others, are used. The Geographically accurate modeling of feed-in stations, in combination with population distribution tables and power consumption at county or community level, is useful for network simulation.

Simulation: For network simulation (e.g. load flow, compliance with operation resource-limit parameters, incident analysis, n-1 security), open source and commercial programs (GridLab-D, DIgSILENT, NEPLAN, PSS / SINCAL) are used, and in-house software systems are developed. Modeling (ePowMod) and web-based data management and visualization (ePowVis) of the simulation models are realized in the software modules of the eASiMOV Toolbox (electrical grid Analysis, Simulation, Modeling, Optimization and Visualization).

Measurement, data archiving and analysis: For high-frequency and time-synchronous acquisition of time series data in the electrical distribution network, measurement instruments (EDR: Electrical Data Recorder) were developed, tested and operated in the KIT network.
