  • The aim of the “Smart Design and Construction” (SDaC) research project is to use artificial intelligence (AI) to make construction projects faster and more efficient. To this end, the large, weakly structured, heterogeneous and distributed data of the individual companies is processed and made usable using artificial intelligence methods. The research project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).

As part of SDaC, the “Semantic Data Models” (SDM) working group at the IAI has developed an application for creating building models based on a room book. Room books are created in early planning phases to document the space requirements in construction projects. In these early phases, however, there is usually no building model available. With the help of the room book and the definition of the outer contour of the individual storeys, floor plans are created for each storey. A three-dimensional building model can be generated with additional information such as the storey height, the component thicknesses for walls, ceilings and roof as well as the material information for the components. This building model can be used in OpenBIM-compatible tools for further planning or for various simulation applications, such as estimating the thermal behavior of the building.

The “SDaC LayoutDesigner” application can be downloaded from our download page for free use.
