Energy Package-based Power Grid for the “All Electrical Society“

The project aims to make the electricity grid fit for an All Electrical Society, which is emerging in the context of the energy transition, and which is characteristic of an energy system of the future based on 100% renewable energy. The key to this is to increase the robustness and stability of the power grid and to make better and more flexible use of line and storage capacities. For this purpose, proven concepts from the Internet are to be used and transformed into the power grid.

Both the power grid and the Internet are critical infrastructures that connect geographically distributed entities. Robustness on the Internet is achieved, among other things, through its design as a network of networks - it loosely couples autonomous sub-networks to a global Internet that runs smoothly even if individual sub-networks fail. The project transfers this concept to the transformation of the current rigidly coupled power grid in order to increase its robustness and stability sustainably. Additionally, energy packages transmit electricity to increase flexibility and thus improve the use of line capacities. The new system will result in higher capacity utilization and increased robustness as well as the self-organization of local sub-networks in the event of failure.
