At KIT, a container-sized power-to-methanol plant was built and successfully tested in the Energy Lab in a collaboration between the Institute for Micro Process Engineering (IMVT) and the Institute of Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI). Since early 2025, the plant has been operating at Mannheim’s sewage treatment plant as part of a joint project with KIT spin-off ICODOS and EBS Mannheim, where it is being used for measurement campaigns under real-world conditions. On March 24, 2025, the KIT power-to-methanol plant in Mannheim was officially opened by Dr. Volker Wissing, Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport.
