BMFTR joint project No. 05K2025 „VIRTUAL MUSEUM – Enabling 3D digitization and virtualization of scientific collections from natural history museums at PETRA III/IV. Subproject 3.“
The VIRTUAL MUSEUM project sets a milestone in the digitization of museum collections of fossil and modern organisms. The aim is to create a technological basis for making large, diverse collections accessible for research. Innovative technologies such as intelligent robotics and AI-supported image control are being used to develop digital biodiversity repositories that enable more precise and flexible analysis. In addition, a virtual reality environment for exhibitions is being created to fully exploit the educational and outreach potential. The project supports the German digitization strategy and lays the foundation for a Europe-wide initiative for the digital development of natural history museums.
