NEED – New Data for the Energy Transition

Joint project: 01256602/1 – EnEff:Stadt: NEED – New Data for the Energy Transition; Subproject: Semantic Metadata and Ontology Linking

The NEED platform accelerates the processes of a data ecosystem. Heterogeneous energy-related data sources are brought together in an automated way and linked consistently across the different sectors as well as temporal and spatial levels by means of ontologies. In this context, existing data platforms are not to be replaced, but rather integrated as a source into the ecosystem. In addition to conventional data sources of the different planning levels, possibilities to fill gaps with synthetic data will be explored. The NEED platform is a robust, low-maintenance, and flexible tool for planning energy measures at different spatial scales without losing sight of the big picture. Tools and models of the partners shall access the required data via semantic queries to perform the respective (planning) tasks. The NEED approach for a transparent provision of current data will be evaluated on application examples.

The goal of the subproject “Semantic Metadata and Ontology Linking” is to describe the data sets and associated interfaces of the partners by means of semantic metadata, and to represent these interfaces on the one hand for accessing these data, and on the other hand also for describing relationships between data. With the help of an articulation ontology, which establishes the relations between terms/concepts of the individual ontologies, explicit and implicit relations between data are made usable using the taxonomy. New tools for the management (creation, maintenance, representation as FAIR Digital Objects) of semantic metadata will be created or existing tools will be extended according to the requirements of the project.
