The Optimization and Control Group at the Institute for Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI) is working on the design of optimization-based control methods tailored to applications in energy systems, mechatronics, process control and climate-economics. Our key competences are: design and implementation of optimization-based control, model predictive control and nonlinear control including their application and implementation for nonlinear processes and systems.

  • NMPC block course at St. Peterburg State University:
     
November 2017, three-day block course Nonlinear Model Predictive Control at the Faculty for Applied Mathematics, St. Peterburg State University given by Timm Faulwasser. The Faculty of Applied Mathematics (founded by V. Zubov as the first department for applied maths in the world) is one of the leading institutions for systems and control in Russia.
  • Research proposal accepted:
     
The Australian Research Council has approved a joint proposal of Chris Kellett, Steve Weller (University of Newcastle, Australia), Willi Semmler (New School of Social Reseach, USA) and Lars Grüne (University of Bayreuth, Germany) and the OC group on Uncertainty in the social cost of carbon dioxide: control theoretic methods. Timm Faulwasser will contribute to project as international partner investigator. Statistics: success rate of 19% in the 2017 round of the corresponding ARC funding scheme; less than 10 control-oriented proposals funded in this round.

Together with Lars Grüne (University of Bayreuth) and Matthias Müller (University of Stuttgart) we are organizing a pre-conference workshop for the upcoming CDC in Melbourne. The workshop will present the state of the art as well as open problems on economic model predictive control. Details on the content and the registration can be found on the conference website.

Together with Florian Dörfler (ETH Zürich) we are organizing an invited session on "Advances on Optimal Power Flow - Robust and Stochastic Approaches" for the upcoming CDC in Melbourne.   • The Advanced Control Group is organizing two invited open tracks at the IFAC 2017 World Congress.
     
Together with groups from the University of Bremen and the University of Porto we proposed the open invited track on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Mechatronic Systems and Motion Control. In parallel, we teamed up with groups from EPFL and the University of Edinburgh to organize another open invited track on Real-Time Optimization of Uncertain Process Systems.
